NINETEEN

The old idea that helping someone else could make your own problems seem dimmer was true. Reese didn’t know that it helped them go away any quicker, or even at all, and she wasn’t sure driving an interesting companion who actually benefitted her with wisdom and conversation was helping someone else, but it’d felt good to get out of her own head for a while. Focus on something other than the crazy swirling around her life the past week.

She’d had to postpone her appointment with Dennis in order to get Olivia to The Bridge, but it’d been a necessary delay. Besides, what was Dennis going to tell her that she didn’t already know? How could he produce Sylvie Kinkaid money from thin air? And what could he tell her apart from what she’d already seen herself in his thorough documentation of Rescued’s finances?

Nonetheless, she should call him soon, try and reschedule for tomorrow morning if he could spare the time. She wouldn’t mind speaking to him, too, before BPD got a hold of him, if they hadn’t already. But again, to what end? She had nothing to hide, and he had nothing to be dishonest about when questioned. Rescued was on the up and up, and there was not much else to say about it.

Their personal relationship—one of trust and mutual respect—wasn’t of any concern either. As minister of the church situated in the lot beside Rescued, Dennis was respected by many more than just Reese . . . which meant that favorable opinion of his could go far in an interview, or in court, should it come to that.

And suddenly, she thought irritably, good, solid relationships were devolving into a dissection of how they would translate to a jury as one of those character reviews Cormick seemed to think she had in the bag.

Agitated, she shut off the blaring radio with a flick of her wrist. She couldn’t even find peace in her own car with her own music anymore.

And she needed that. Craved it, in fact, she realized, as she caught herself white-knuckling the wheel.

Since her arrest a mere forty-eight hours ago, (how could it be so recent and seem so long ago?), she hadn’t had a moments rest. She’d been in action mode. Thinking, planning, worrying, doing, analyzing, going, keeping her normal stride at Rescued, all while juggling an enormously troubling accusation, defense of that, and, as of this morning, fallouts because of said accusation.

It was a lot, even for Reese.

One thing that manic pace may not have covered? Coping.

If she was being honest, she still hadn’t really wrapped her head around what exactly was happening to her, and how exactly she’d gotten to this place.

This morning’s extreme behavior, if nothing else, clearly proved that.

And brought about the next wave of damage control, too, she conceded with a roll of her eyes. More gossip, more speculation, more why did she freak out if she isn’t guilty.

That was one of many questions that were likely being asked about her, she knew.
